Kroger suspends egg supplier that tortured hens

The video showed Mahard workers beating hens’ heads against metal boxes and keeping them in sheds where temperatures reached 106 degrees. The workers also bludgeoned hens with a board and gassed many hens with carbon dioxide, which caused extreme pain.

STEVE WATKINS: ‘Cincinnati-based Kroger, the nation’s largest operator of traditional supermarkets, said it is “taking steps to suspend supply” from the Mahard Egg Farm facility near Sulphur, Okla. Mahard is based in Prosper, Texas, and is a local supplier to Kroger’s Texas stores… An investigation by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, a well-known activist group known as PETA, found the farm was torturing and brutally killing unwanted hens.

PETA posted a video on its website and on social media showing Mahard workers beating hens’ heads against metal boxes and keeping them in sheds where temperatures reached 106 degrees. The workers also bludgeoned hens with a board and gassed many hens with carbon dioxide, which PETA says caused extreme pain.

Nearly 8,000 hens suffered and died over several weeks in July and August at the farm due to the extreme heat in the sheds, PETA says. It also says more than 49,000 hens were killed by being beaten and gassed, with many being left to die in agony. Mahard keeps about 1.2 million hens at the farm’. SOURCE…
